Cheers to One Year of Becoming Marketable

Happy Birthday to my blog, well really my grandmother and I’s blog! What a fun year it has been documenting the funny moments in the kitchen, life and everything in between.

To recap the year, we put together the most popular posts for those who missed them and those who’d like to read them again:

Mema’s Take 9.18.12

It’s time for another “Mema’s Take” where she imparts her knowledge upon us.

Red or White Wine?

I don’t know, but I do know different personality types choose different ones. Like me, I like to party and fun a good time and I like white!

What did you think of the Spice Girls Reunion at the Olympics?

I like my spices where I can see them everyday — in my kitchen cabinet.

How do you feel about Florida State being ranked #4?

It doesn’t matter where we are as long as we are ahead of Steve Spurrier’s team and that other team from Gainesville.

What do you think of the crop top fad?

I’ve always said ‘it pays to advertise!’

** If you have questions for Mema, just comment and she will answer them on the next “Mema’s Take” blog post**

Banana Bread Goodness

Growing up Mema used to always make us banana bread and I loved going to her house to eat it.  Well I think it’s about time I learned how to make such an easy recipe!

When I got to her house, she had all of the ingredients out and ready, such an all-star grandmother.

Mema told me, This is your most marketable thing yet, just wait till the guys taste this!”

Here is our age old recipe:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 3 large bananas
  • 2 cups of flour sifted
  • 1 level tsp soda
  • 1/2 cup nuts (we used walnuts)
  • Bake at 275 for an hour to an hour and a half

Mema got this cookbook in the early 50’s. Lots of love in this book. She always says “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.”

Measuring the shortening in water.

Mema’s Take

Mema and I have decided it’s time to add a new component to the blog, “Mema’s Take.”

She will enlighten us with her thoughts on current events. She will also tweet some of her thoughts on @MemaSays.

August 2, 2012:

How do you feel about Chick-Fil-A?

“I love Chick-Fil-A sandwiches, but I also love my gay friends!”

What do you think of Fla. Governor Scott?

“He’s doing what he said he would do, if elected. I do wish he’d cut his hair.”

What do you think of Michael Phelps being called the “best” Olympian of all time?

“I’ll be glad to store his medals for him – if I have any room in my attic!”

What would you like to ask Mema about?  We will use your questions on next weeks blog. 🙂

It’s Not Always 50/50

We took this video in Utah as Mema was making breakfast…

It’s time for some Mema mid-week advice.

She says people ask her all the time… what is the secret to a great relationship?

It’s simple, she says.

Sometimes you are going to give 75 percent and your partner will give 25, and sometimes you are the 10 percent, and the other is the 90, but you need to know when to give and take to appreciate the balance.

nothing like a grandmother’s advice

This past weekend a few of my friends came over to cookout at Mema’s house with my dad… while he manned the grill we had some great girl talk over wine…

Mema had some great advice for us when looking for a future husband. She says her top 3 priorities are:

–       dependable

–       trustworthy

–       someone who absolutely       adores you

She also said if someone ever lies to you – let him go! No second chances!  We all kind of sat there thinking about this one, because everyone makes mistakes, right?  But she has a valid point.

One of my favorite quotes from Mema “Looks is only skin deep, but ugly goes straight to the bone.”

I got to spend all weekend with the Love/Marketability guru!  Saturday we went to my dad’s birthday party… here is one of my favorite photos of Mema.  She loves her Riesling!

She made this Happy Birthday banner for the party, which reminds me:

I need to learn how to sew!  I will definitely be taking on that task in the near future.

Here are some of my favorite pictures from the party:

Sunday was dedicated to the Super Bowl.  Mema reminded me to have flowers in the house so we went out to her yard and picked a bunch of different ones.

She made sure I picked the right ones, and OF COURSE, she was right – they made the house look beautiful.

The Super Bowl party was a success, and Mema came for awhile.   She gave advice to a bunch of the people there and decided that she is going to do “MEMA BOOTCAMP”  a girls NIGHT and a boys WEEK of advice…

She says we all needed lots of work, but she won’t tell us what she tells the other group.

WHO WANTS IN?!  It’s like going to camp, but better food 🙂
